Water Heater Making Noise? Popping, Rumbling & Hissing Explained

Noise from a water heater is usually sediment — and a sign the tank needs attention before it fails.

Popping and rumbling

Minerals from hard water settle at the bottom of the tank. Water trapped under the sediment boils and pops. Flushing the tank once a year prevents this; once sediment is thick, it insulates the burner, wastes gas and overheats the steel.

Hissing or sizzling

Usually condensation dripping on the burner, or — more seriously — a small leak. Check the floor around the tank and the pressure relief valve.

Screeching or high-pitched whine

Restricted water flow through a partially closed inlet valve or a failing heating element on electric units.

Is it time to replace?

A noisy heater over 10 years old with rusty water or any sign of leaking should be replaced before it fails and floods. A noisy younger unit usually just needs a flush and anode rod check.
