Brown Water From the Faucet: Causes and Fixes

Discolored water is usually rust — from the city main, your water heater, or your own pipes.

Hot water only?

If only the hot side is brown, the water heater is rusting inside. Flushing may help briefly; a rusting tank is usually near the end of its life.

Cold water too?

Brown cold water after a hydrant flush or main break clears in a few hours. Brown water that persists — or appears every morning — points to corroded galvanized pipes in your own home.

Galvanized pipe and health

Rust itself isn't dangerous, but corroding galvanized pipe can also hold lead solder from older joints. Many homeowners choose repiping for peace of mind as well as clear water and better pressure.

Next steps

Run cold water for 10 minutes. If it clears, wait and watch. If it doesn't, or if it's only the hot side, call for a water heater and pipe inspection.
